AIR Centre addresses Atlantic Cooperation at AtlantECO Conference

Today, on September 19, the AIR Centre took part in a panel discussion at the AtlantECO Final Scientific Conference in Ponta Delgada, Azores (September 15-19), contributing to debates on strengthening Atlantic Ocean cooperation and advancing research coordination. During the plenary session "From Atlantic Cooperation to Global Ocean Policy," Sofia Cordeiro, AIR Centre's Deputy Executive Director, presented the organization's vision for effective Atlantic cooperation, highlighting its strategic perspective on what is needed to strengthen collaborative research and innovation efforts across Atlantic regions. Her presentation also focused on the role of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research & Innovation Alliance (AAORIA) and the OKEANO CSA project, which provides support for AAORIA initiatives.

Natalia Ospina-Alvarez, Head of Biodiversity & Blue Economy at the AIR Centre, showcased practical examples like the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP) and the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON), that have been addressing the Southern Gap, and fostering Atlantic cooperation "from pole to pole," , while demonstrating how these initiatives are promoting more equitable and comprehensive approaches to Atlantic Ocean research and conservation.

The conference marked the conclusion of the EU-funded AtlantECO project, which brought together experts from Europe, South America, and Africa to advance research on Atlantic Ocean microbiomes, microplastics, and seascape connectivity, providing a platform for discussing the latest findings in Atlantic Ocean research.

The AIR Centre's participation reflects the organization's ongoing commitment to the advancement of Atlantic cooperation and support of the development and transfer of knowledge for better ocean management and ecosystem services.
