AIR Centre and Fiocruz join forces to address Blue One Health programme

On February 19, 2025, the AIR Centre and the Foundation Osvaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the scope of the XIV Luso-Brazilian Summit, in Brasilia, enhancing the collaboration in the Blue One Health program and fostering ties between both countries. The XIV Luso-Brazilian Summit, led by the prime-minister Luís Montenegro and Brazilian president Lula da Silva, highlighted the bilateral cooperation in the fields of health, science and technology, economy and justice. The MoU for international cooperation between both organizations intends to establish international cooperation in the field of the Blue One Health, by defining the framework for cooperation to address the Blue One Health, through the advancement of research in the production of medications. Blue One Health is an integrated approach within broader One Health framework, aiming to sustainably optimize the health of the people, animals and ecosystems and promoting the awareness of the importance of the ocean for health. The collaboration between both organizations aims to the development of projects, creation of platforms to spread knowledge about Blue One Health, to exchange researchers and students, to develop sustainable scientific activities and other common interest activities. AIR Centre’s commitment to developing scientific activities through international cooperation as well as advancing research projects and promoting networks within the Atlantic Basin aligns with the Fiocruz’s mission to promote health and social development as well as scientific and technological knowledge.

The new office is located in the same building that also hosts ApexBrasil, Embratur and Sebrae, reinforcing Brazil’s institutional presence in Portugal and expanding opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

Meeting with the Hon Consul‑General of the Kingdom of Tonga strengthens dialogue on ocean science and climate cooperation

On 2 July, the AIR Centre hosted a meeting at its Lisbon office with the Comendador Anthony Bailey, Honourable Consul-General of His Majesty The King of Tonga to the Portuguese Republic. The discussion brought together AIR Centre Executive Director Miguel Miranda, Deputy Executive Director Mafalda Carapuço, and researcher Ana Faria, marking the beginning of a promising dialogue between the two nations.
