The WKLIFE XIV workshop, organised by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea - ICES, was held September 1-5 in the Azores.
The AIR Centre, alongside Angola's National Fisheries Institute (INIPM) team, joined international experts to address one of fisheries science's biggest challenges: managing fish stocks with limited data.
WKLIFE is a series of workshops aimed at developing practical methods to assess fish stocks in situations where countries lack sufficient data for traditional, complex models. Instead, scientists draw on information such as species growth, reproduction, fishing patterns, and catches to provide robust, precautionary advice for fisheries management.
This approach was particularly relevant for nations like Angola, where extensive Atlantic coastlines support vital fisheries but historical data remains limited. The workshop's hands-on methodology allowed participants to immediately apply learned techniques in their home countries.
Angola’s participation provides direct access to advanced fisheries assessment tools while positioning the country as an active member of the global fisheries science community. It also creates opportunities for future research collaborations and technical assistance programs that are vital for sustainable marine resource management.
For Angola, where fisheries are central to both economic development and food security, this represents an important step toward stronger ocean management and deeper engagement in international marine science initiatives.
