AIR Centre Highlights Ocean Climate Monitoring at COP29

On November 21, the AIR Centre hosted a session at the 29th Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The session, part of the "Nature and Biodiversity, Indigenous People, Gender Equality, Oceans, and Coastal Zones" theme, focused on "Monitoring the Ocean Climate with Space and Data Science."

The session was led by Miguel Miranda and Mafalda Carapuço (AIR Centre's Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director), Tânia Mandiga Barreto (National Director for Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, Angola's Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources), and Guilherme Netto (ST&I Specialist in Health, Environment, and Sustainability at Fiocruz - Osvaldo Cruz Foundation), where he coordinates the Institutional Program for Health, Environment and Sustainability.

Highlights included Angola's National Maritime Strategy, emphasizing the critical role of international cooperation in ocean observation and research, and Fiocruz's Strategy for Climate and Health (ECS/Fiocruz). The latter showcased its One Blue Health approach, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and global health by bridging scientific, community, and institutional efforts to support a healthy ocean and a sustainable future. The AIR Centre has signed the COP29 Baku Ocean Declaration, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ocean health through science-based actions. The session addressed crucial gaps in ocean observation data, particularly in polar regions and deep ocean ecosystems.
