AIR Centre participates in ICES Fisheries Assessment Workshop in Azores

This week, the ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) Workshop on the Development of Quantitative Assessment Methodologies (WKLIFE XIV) is taking place on the Portuguese island of Faial in the Azores, running until Friday, September 5.

This specialized workshop focuses on developing and improving ICES methods for providing scientific advice on data-limited fish stocks, utilizing life-history traits, exploitation characteristics, and other relevant parameters to enhance stock assessment methodologies.

AIR Centre is attending with a team from the National Fisheries Institute of Angola (INIPM), engaging in discussions about the current status, challenges, and priorities concerning marine fish stocks in Angola. This collaboration demonstrates how combining international expertise with local knowledge can effectively address complex fisheries management challenges in data-limited environments.

The workshop addresses critical needs in fisheries science, particularly for regions where traditional data collection methods face operational or resource constraints. By developing robust methodologies for data-limited stock assessments, this initiative supports evidence-based fisheries management decisions across diverse Atlantic contexts.
