AIR Centre strengthens educational outreach at 1st Regional Meeting of Azores Space Teachers Network (ASTN)

The AIR Centre joined the 1st Regional Meeting of the Azores Space Teachers Network (ASTN) on July 16–17 on São Miguel Island, Azores, reinforcing its commitment to space education and regional development. The event featured contributions from the Space Systems and Applications Program team members Joaquim Melo and Mariana Ávila, both invited to present the AIR Centre's mission and most significant space projects to an audience of educators and industry professionals. Joaquim Melo participated in “Panel 1: Overview of Space in the Azores,” the opening session of the round table "From the Azores to the World: Investing in Knowledge". He joined a panel of experts including João Neves (Thales Edisoft Portugal) and Luísa Magalhães (Raege-Az), both representing well-established space sector initiatives active in the Azores. Joaquim Melo’s presentation offered a comprehensive overview of the AIR Centre, from its foundational mission and internal structure to its key areas of operation. He emphasized the Centre’s role as a bridge between international space research and regional development, positioning the Azores as a strategic hub for Atlantic space activities. The second panel, "Successful projects in the national and European space sector," featured Mariana Ávila alongside Artur Gil from the University of the Azores and Miguel Morgado from the Atlantic Spaceport Consortium, where she highlighted key initiatives from the AIR Centre’s Space Systems and Applications Program, underscoring their vital role within both international and regional scientific ecosystems. Her presentation illustrated how the AIR Centre’s efforts contribute to broader European space agendas while also responding to the unique challenges faced in the Atlantic area. This first Regional Meeting of the ASTN, aimed at primary, secondary, and vocational education teachers, featured speakers from the scientific and business communities, along with two Regional Secretaries. It focused on promoting space-related content in education through stronger networking. Beyond presentations, the event fostered valuable connections with schools across the Azores, with many educators expressing interest in visiting the AIR Centre and exploring future collaborations. The AIR Centre’s participation highlighted its strategic role in linking global space initiatives with regional development. By engaging in educational outreach, the Centre reinforces its mission to support sustainable development and foster the next generation of space professionals.
