Aquaculture Working Group gathers in French Guiana to discuss Ultra Peripheral Regions' challenges

Last week, on September 20th, 2024, Cayenne (French Guiana) hosted a significant meeting of the Working Group on Aquaculture, organized by the Advisory Council of the Ultra Peripheral Regions (CCRUP). The gathering focused on identifying challenges and opportunities for aquaculture development in the EU's outermost regions. The AIR Centre, a notable participant, delivered a technical presentation on 'Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture', offering recommendations for its implementation. Their expertise contributed to the broader discussion on sustainable aquaculture practices in these unique geographical areas. Founded in 2019, the CCRUP serves as a vital platform for small-scale fishers in the EU's most remote regions to advise decision-makers. With its current membership of 64 organizations, the Council plays a crucial role in representing the interests of these often-overlooked communities. The CCRUP's primary objective is to recommend measures for effective fishery resource management. These recommendations aim to strike a delicate balance between maintaining or restoring marine resource safety limits and considering the socio-economic aspects of fishing in the Outermost Regions' communities. This meeting marks another step in the ongoing efforts to sustainably develop aquaculture in the EU's Ultra Peripheral Regions, highlighting the importance of collaborative approaches in addressing the unique challenges these areas face.
