GMES & Africa Launches Innovative Copernicus Training for African Practitioners

GMES & Africa and Working Group Africa have announced an exciting new training program. This initiative is a a significant step towards enhancing Earth observation capabilities across Africa. It focuses on empowering African practitioners with advanced Copernicus Earth observation skills, crucial for addressing the continent's environmental and security challenges.

This training program runs from November 2024 to May 2025 and offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes:

  • Core skills like QGIS, Python, and Artificial Intelligence, among others
  • Specialized topics such as water and land management, marine and coastal management, disaster risk management, and Climate change monitoring

This initiative aims to build a community of skilled professionals capable of leveraging Copernicus data for sustainable development, disaster response, and climate change adaptation across Africa.

Applications are open until October 6, 2024. Only 20 seats are available in this inaugural session. For more information, please visit the official webpage.

GMES & Africa is a joint initiative of the African Union Commission and the European Commission. Over the years, it has become a flagship program of the African Union for the use of Earth observation and now serves as the AUC Earth Observation Program supporting the vision of "The Africa We Want". On September 10, partners from AIR Centre (Portugal), UNAM (Mexico) and IMar (Cabo Verde) held the kick-off meeting for ATLANTICO_SARG, a new triangular cooperation project funded under the second Call of the SEGIB / Camões, I.P. Triangular Cooperation Fund. Held online, the meeting brougtht together researchers and representatives from all three partner institutions to address the growing impact of Sargassum seaweed flooding on Cabo Verde's coasts.

Australian Ambassador strengthens scientific and diplomatic engagement during visit to the AIR Centre

The Australian Ambassador to Portugal, Dr. Helen Cheney, who also serves as Ambassador to Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau and Sao Tome and Principe, visited the AIR Centre on Terceira Island as part of her official programme in the Azores. The visit emphasized scientific cooperation and the growing relevance of the Atlantic in Australia’s international engagement.
