Workshop strengthens scientific collaboration for sustainable fisheries in Angola

On October 20-24, a team from the AIR Centre met with researchers from the National Institute of Fisheries and Marine Research (INIPM) and the University of the Azores, in Luanda, Angola, to prepare a scientific report supporting the recommendation of Total Allowable Catches (TAC) for small pelagic fish stocks for 2026. For five days, the team analysed available stock assessment data and formed thematic subgroups to review and organize datasets. The resulting scientific report will be integrated into an INIPM report to be presented at the next Integrated Fisheries Management Council.

Participants also debated key challenges affecting fish stock assessment in Angola, and discussed recommendations to strengthen the National Biological Sampling Plan.

Finally, the institutions agreed to explore future collaboration opportunities, aiming to ensure continuous technical and scientific support for INIPM and to further strengthen international cooperation in fisheries research.

On September 10, partners from AIR Centre (Portugal), UNAM (Mexico) and IMar (Cabo Verde) held the kick-off meeting for ATLANTICO_SARG, a new triangular cooperation project funded under the second Call of the SEGIB / Camões, I.P. Triangular Cooperation Fund. Held online, the meeting brougtht together researchers and representatives from all three partner institutions to address the growing impact of Sargassum seaweed flooding on Cabo Verde's coasts.

Australian Ambassador strengthens scientific and diplomatic engagement during visit to the AIR Centre

The Australian Ambassador to Portugal, Dr. Helen Cheney, who also serves as Ambassador to Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau and Sao Tome and Principe, visited the AIR Centre on Terceira Island as part of her official programme in the Azores. The visit emphasized scientific cooperation and the growing relevance of the Atlantic in Australia’s international engagement.
