Global shipboard training welcomes early-career scientists on upcoming RV Polarstern expedition (deadline extended to March 31)

The Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) has announced the launch of a new expedition aboard the RV Polarstern, Germany’s largest research vessel. The expedition will feature an Ocean Capacity Exchange Shipboard Training program and is scheduled to depart from Bremerhaven, Germany, on November 20 and will complete its journey on December 17, 2025, arriving in Walvis Bay, Namibia. In what will be the fifth training expedition, 20 scholarships will be awarded to international students and early-career researchers. Additionally, for the first time, five extra scholarships will be offered for future trainers, specifically targeting postgraduate students in climate or marine science-related fields. The call for applications has been extended to 15 March, 2025. The selection criteria will be based on experience, diversity and contributions to capacity-building. The training focuses on oceanography techniques, marine biogeochemistry, biological oceanography, data analysis and scientific communication. Oceanographic training experiences are designed to students and early-career researchers. The participants will have the unique opportunity to learn advanced techniques of Oceanography, Atmosphere and Climate as well as to develop essential skills for a career in marine and ocean sciences. The expedition is an initiative of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), with the support of the Partnership for the Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO), the Nippon Foundation (NF), the University of Galway and Chair of Climate Sciences, Trinity College Dublin.
