From August 26 to 29, 2024, Washington D.C. hosted the
All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA) and the
Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation Ocean Observations & Modeling Workshop. Organized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. State Department, this workshop contributed and pushed forward multilateral ocean science collaboration with a focus on the Atlantic basin.
AAORIA, established to foster research and innovation across the Atlantic, is built on principles outlined in the AAORIA Declaration, signed in 2022. The workshop involved the participation of various science experts in ocean observation and modelling, including the AIR Centre, and represented a step towards the implementation of the Ocean Observing and Modeling Area of Action, a key priority established during the
2023 AAORIA Annual Forum.
The aim of the workshop was to gather expert input in ocean science to identify key research priorities for Atlantic ocean observation and modelling cooperation and to develop a comprehensive work plan for the AAORIA Ocean Observing and Modeling initiative. This plan will be submitted to AAORIA's High-Level Board for approval. Additionally, it will be shared with the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation ahead of the
upcoming AAORIA Forum, scheduled for October 8-10, in Ottawa, Canada. The 2024 Forum will focus on opportunities for collaborative science, emphasizing coordinated efforts in ocean observation and understanding the ocean-climate relationship to support coastal resilience.
AAORIA aims to enhance marine research and innovation that delivers societal benefits across the Atlantic. By bringing together experts in ocean observations and modeling, AAORIA continues to build international cooperation to address global ocean challenges.
