World Space Week 2023 launch in Ponta Delgada

Last Wednesday, in Ponta Delgada, the office of the Regional Undersecretary of the Presidency, through the Azores Mission Structure for Space (EMA-Space), promoted a public launch session of World Space Week 2023, attended by the national coordinator of World Space Week, Cláudio Gomes, and AIR Centre’s Project Developer, Mariana Ávila. The public event, which welcomed the general public and more than 120 students, focused on the dissemination and promotion of scientific culture to young students, showing the importance of space exploration and the benefits of space technologies. AIR Centre’s Project Developer, Mariana Ávila, explained the theoretical foundations of remote sensing and showcased the potential of Earth Observation. This participation was a great opportunity to highlight the role Earth Observation plays in addressing environmental and societal challenges, while also fostering knowledge sharing, and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators. World Space Week also allows to foster awareness and appreciation of space science and technology, making it accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. It highlights the collaborative efforts of nations and organizations in addressing critical challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and the quest for knowledge beyond our planet. Celebrated from the 4th to 10th October, each year, World Space Week is a global event endorsed by the United Nations to promote space science and technology. It commemorates key space milestones, such as the launch of Sputnik 1 and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty. During this week, organizations worldwide host educational activities, exhibitions, and events to engage the public, inspire interest in space, and encourage international collaboration. This year, World Space Week was dedicated to entrepreneurship within the space sector.
