AIR Centre’s Internal Waves Workshop Published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS)

The AIR Centre is pleased to announce the online publication of our article, "The Internal Waves Service Workshop: Observing Internal Waves Globally with Deep Learning and Synthetic Aperture Radar," in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS). This paper presents key insights from the Internal Waves Service Workshop, held in April 2025 on Terceira Island, Azores, and organized by the AIR Centre, in collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT), the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), and the French National Institute for Ocean Science (IFREMER). The event brought together an international group of experts to explore innovative approaches to observing internal waves globally using Deep Learning and Earth Observation technologies. In addition to the organizing institutions, the workshop included participants from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), the University of Southern Mississippi, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA JPL) — all of whom are co-authors of this paper. This initiative was very well received by the scientific community, highlighting the growing interest in internal solitary waves and the importance of building a more unified approach in the field — while promoting the integration of artificial intelligence with satellite-based ocean monitoring. The workshop also marked a significant step forward in the development of an international Internal Waves Service, aiming to improve our understanding of ocean dynamics and support applications in climate, ecosystems, and maritime operations. International Workshop in the Azores strengthens marine biodiversity data sharing

The second edition of the Enhancing Marine Biodiversity Data Collection and Publication workshop took place on Terceira Island, Azores, from 19 to 23 October, bringing together researchers, data managers and marine practitioners from Europe, Africa and the Americas. Organised by the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) and the AIR Centre, the workshop focused on strengthening skills in marine biodiversity data collection, standardisation and publication.

Small pelagic stock assessment in Angola: strengthening the science behind sustainable catches

From October 19 to 23, 2026, a team from the AIR Centre returned to Luanda for a working meeting with colleagues from Angola’s National Institute of Fisheries and Marine Research (INIPM), the University of the Azores and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). This is the second year of a partnership that supports the scientific assessment of Angola’s small pelagic fish stocks.
