AIR Centre’s Internal Waves Workshop Published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS)

The AIR Centre is pleased to announce the online publication of our article, "The Internal Waves Service Workshop: Observing Internal Waves Globally with Deep Learning and Synthetic Aperture Radar," in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS). This paper presents key insights from the Internal Waves Service Workshop, held in April 2025 on Terceira Island, Azores, and organized by the AIR Centre, in collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT), the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), and the French National Institute for Ocean Science (IFREMER). The event brought together an international group of experts to explore innovative approaches to observing internal waves globally using Deep Learning and Earth Observation technologies. In addition to the organizing institutions, the workshop included participants from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), the University of Southern Mississippi, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA JPL) — all of whom are co-authors of this paper. This initiative was very well received by the scientific community, highlighting the growing interest in internal solitary waves and the importance of building a more unified approach in the field — while promoting the integration of artificial intelligence with satellite-based ocean monitoring. The workshop also marked a significant step forward in the development of an international Internal Waves Service, aiming to improve our understanding of ocean dynamics and support applications in climate, ecosystems, and maritime operations.
