AIR Centre’s Internal Waves Workshop Published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS)

The AIR Centre is pleased to announce the online publication of our article, "The Internal Waves Service Workshop: Observing Internal Waves Globally with Deep Learning and Synthetic Aperture Radar," in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS). This paper presents key insights from the Internal Waves Service Workshop, held in April 2025 on Terceira Island, Azores, and organized by the AIR Centre, in collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT), the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), and the French National Institute for Ocean Science (IFREMER). The event brought together an international group of experts to explore innovative approaches to observing internal waves globally using Deep Learning and Earth Observation technologies. In addition to the organizing institutions, the workshop included participants from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), the University of Southern Mississippi, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA JPL) — all of whom are co-authors of this paper. This initiative was very well received by the scientific community, highlighting the growing interest in internal solitary waves and the importance of building a more unified approach in the field — while promoting the integration of artificial intelligence with satellite-based ocean monitoring. The workshop also marked a significant step forward in the development of an international Internal Waves Service, aiming to improve our understanding of ocean dynamics and support applications in climate, ecosystems, and maritime operations. ATLANTICO_SARG project officially launched to tackle Sargassum impacts through science and collaboration

On September 10, partners from AIR Centre (Portugal), UNAM (Mexico) and IMar (Cabo Verde) held the kick-off meeting for ATLANTICO_SARG, a new triangular cooperation project funded under the second Call of the SEGIB / Camões, I.P. Triangular Cooperation Fund. Held online, the meeting brougtht together researchers and representatives from all three partner institutions to address the growing impact of Sargassum seaweed flooding on Cabo Verde's coasts.

Australian Ambassador strengthens scientific and diplomatic engagement during visit to the AIR Centre

The Australian Ambassador to Portugal, Dr. Helen Cheney, who also serves as Ambassador to Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe, visited the AIR Centre on Terceira Island as part of her official programme in the Azores. The visit emphasized scientific cooperation and the growing relevance of the Atlantic in Australia’s international engagement.
