AIR Centre highlights Atlantic research priorities at 4th Global Ocean Summit (GOS)

The 4th Global Ocean Summit (GOS 2026) took place in Hong Kong, China, from 18 to 21 May 2026, and AIR Centre's Executive Director Miguel Miranda and Deputy Executive Director Mafalda Carapuço attended the summit, where both delivered presentations across plenary and thematic sessions. Hosted by the Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau (CORE), a joint centre established by Laoshan Laboratory and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the event brought together leading marine scientists, institutions, and policymakers from across the globe for high-level dialogues on the future of ocean science and innovation. Aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 to 2030), GOS 2026 aims to foster international partnerships and deepen scientific understanding of the ocean. The summit's agenda focuses on four major themes: Ocean Observation and Prediction; Marine Ecology and Blue Carbon Sink; Marine Hazards and Global Changes; and Marine Big-data and Artificial Intelligence. Miguel Miranda participated in two sessions. On the afternoon of 19 May, he gave a talk at the China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Ocean Research Symposium. The presentation "Give Youngsters a Chance" offered a natural platform for the AIR Centre to highlight its role in connecting Portuguese-speaking nations across the Atlantic basin. At the symposium, Mafalda Carapuço also delivered a keynote on "Cooperation to Foster Blue Economy" and presented the AIR Centre's work in this field at the Plenary Session on Ocean Observation and Prediction.

On 20 May, Miguel Miranda delivered a keynote talk titled "Extreme Events: Growing Social Cost" at the Plenary Session on Marine Hazards and Global Changes, presenting the AIR Centre's research and perspectives on one of the summit's central scientific challenges. This reflects the AIR Centre's growing engagement in global ocean science diplomacy. By contributing to discussions on ocean observation, hazard monitoring, and international research collaboration, it reinforces its position as a key Atlantic voice in the global marine science community and advances its mission of fostering research and innovation partnerships across the Atlantic basin and beyond.
