Blue One Health Dialogues bring global experts together on ocean, health and governance

On 13 May, the Blue One Health Dialogues will bring together global experts to explore the vital connections between ocean systems, human wellbeing, and environmental governance. The AIR Centre plays a founding role in this milestone event as a co-organiser.

Spanning a full day of structured discussions (09:00–16:30, Brasília time), the event will convene leading scientists, policymakers, and institutions from across the Atlantic and beyond to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the interdependence between marine and coastal ecosystem health and the wellbeing of the human, animal, and environmental systems that rely on them.

Held entirely online via Zoom, with Portuguese–English simultaneous interpretation, the event is free and open to all, reflecting the organisers’ commitment to inclusive, science-based dialogue on global ocean governance.

Throughout the day, participants will engage with six interconnected themes: ocean and public health; marine and coastal sustainability; ocean governance and science; environmental surveillance and monitoring; animal and environmental protection; and the integration of terrestrial and aquatic health systems. Together, these themes reflect a comprehensive approach to understanding and managing the ocean as a living system that sustains health.

Each session is designed to bridge scientific knowledge and policy practice, exploring how integrated monitoring, international cooperation, and knowledge-sharing can support more resilient and equitable relationships between societies and their aquatic environments. The format is grounded in the belief that advancing ocean governance requires not only better data, but also stronger dialogue.

For the AIR Centre, whose mission focuses on the sustainable development of Atlantic communities through science, technology, and innovation, the Blue One Health Dialogues represent a natural alignment with its strategic priorities.

The event is co-organised with Fiocruz, the UNESCO Chair for Ocean Sustainability at the University of São Paulo, Lamce/UFRJ, INPO, and OSH for All, bringing together a broad range of expertise to address these complex and interconnected challenges.
