Brazil and the AIR Centre unite to tackle Atlantic ocean challenges

Experts from Brazil’s ocean research community and the Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre) will come together to address pressing challenges faced by the Atlantic Ocean. The event "The Brazilian Perspective of the Ocean Challenge and the AIR Centre" is set to take place at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Rio de Janeiro, on September 16, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (BRT). The meeting will also be streamed live via YouTube, with English translations provided for a global audience. The event aims to strengthen the collective efforts of Brazil and AIR Centre's partners toward ocean health, sustainable blue economies, and climate action. The AIR Centre, which works across the Atlantic Ocean basin - from the Arctic to the Antarctic -, has been instrumental in supporting research, training, and technology development that enhance the understanding and management of the ocean's resources. As a member of the AIR Centre since its foundation, Brazil has played an important role in fostering cross-Atlantic cooperation aimed at protecting the health of the ocean while promoting sustainable development. Through its hubs in Rio de Janeiro, Ceara, Bahia and the Amazonia, it has actively contributed to these efforts, promoting solutions that balance environmental conservation with economic progress. The meeting will serve as a platform for Brazilian researchers and their international counterparts to exchange knowledge, share insights, and strengthen networks that address the challenges of ocean management. It aims to advance activities that highlight the ocean's potential, promote an equitable and sustainable blue economy, and integrate the Blue One Health approach, while also addressing the ocean-climate nexus in preparation for COP30, the upcoming UN Climate Convention - all this contributing to the Ocean 20 recommendations for the G20. This event represents another important step in building a community of willingness —a network of nations, institutions, and researchers committed to the shared goal of protecting and sustainably managing the Atlantic Ocean. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the meeting aims to deepen collaboration and inspire action that can make a lasting difference for both people and the planet and shape a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future for the Atlantic Ocean and all who depend on its resources.
