Monitoring Atlantic African coastlines from space: AIR Centre at MEC2026

The MEC2026 – 8th Conference on Estuarine and Coastal Morphodynamics is taking place today and tomorrow (9-10 April) at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, bringing together researchers and practitioners to discuss the latest advances in coastal science, management, and risk.

Today, Filipe Albuquerque, representing the AIR Centre and Instituto Dom Luiz, presented on the “Assessment of Coastal Evolution Along the Atlantic African Coast Using Satellite Imagery.” As part of the panel on Methodologies and Techniques Applied to the Coastal Zone, the research draws on Earth observation to characterise and monitor coastal change along one of the Atlantic’s most dynamic and understudied coastlines.

MEC2026 provides a forum for presenting research on coastal and estuarine morphodynamics, as well as for exchanging ideas, knowledge, and information on the coastal zone. The programme spans a wide range of themes, including coastal management, protection and conservation, estuarine and coastal dynamics, and coastal hazards.

The AIR Centre’s participation reflects its continued commitment to advancing Earth observation and data-driven approaches in support of sustainable coastal management across the Atlantic.
