New LoRaWAN World Record

New LoRaWAN World Record

The long term LoRaWAN® distance world record now stands at 1336 km / 830 miles! The LoRaWAN trackers, installed on a fishing boat, Estrela de Sesimbra, and on its buoys on the Sesimbra coast, Portugal, were able to make contact with the “cablpa-pitilleros” gateway in the Canarian Islands. Three messages have been received at the gateway, connected to The Things Stack Community Edition, breaking a new record at 1336 km / 830 miles, three years after the previous one was set at 832 km / 517 miles. Conducting the experiment at sea level eliminates potential variables caused by varying altitudes which, in turn, provides a standardized and objective measurement of the technology’s capabilities. The installation of the STMicroelectronics STEVAL-STRKT01 tracker was done by the Custodian project team, led by Solvit and including FIT/ISEL, AIR Centre, DOCAPESCA, LOTAÇOR, NTNU, UAVISION and TERINOV. The project is funded by EEAGRANTS Blue Growth Programme. LoRaWAN is a communication protocol for wide area networks. It is designed to allow Internet of Things devices to communicate with Internet-connected applications over long range wireless connections. Via The Things Network (https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/)
