A New Vision for the Protection and Restoration of Ecosystems and Biodiversity

We are thrilled to announce the official publication of the United Nations Ocean Decade Vision 2030 White Papers. Structured around the 10 Ocean Decade Challenges, the Vision 2030 process aimed to set a tailored and specific strategic ambition, and associated milestones, for each of the Challenges, ensuring their road to success by 2030. The 10 White Papers are a significant outcome of the process, representing a collaborative effort to develop the necessary scientific understanding for the desired future of our oceans. Over the past year, a dedicated team of 20 co-chairs and over 150 experts have worked diligently to assess user needs, prioritize key datasets, and identify gaps in scientific knowledge. The produced comprehensive documents have been reviewed by the global community and were recently presented at the Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona, which provided a unique platform for stakeholders to engage, share insights, and collaboratively advance the implementation of these essential reports. Specifically, the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON), Marine Life 2030, and several other initiatives focus on Challenge 2, "Protect and Restore Ecosystems and Biodiversity" of the United Nations Ocean Decade. The strategic vision outlined in the Vision 2030 white paper about Challenge 2 is “to enable ecosystem-based management approaches using timely and accurate information to promote sustainable development. This includes, but is not limited to, the effective conservation and restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity.” It was an honour for the AIR Centre to be part of the process and we extend our gratitude to the Challenge 2 White Paper co-chairs for their hard work, expertise throughout this process, and for leading the Working Group authoring this document.
