Satellite Event at 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference Addresses Urgency for Solutions for Ocean Microplastic Pollution

On the side-lines of the 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference, a satellite event titled "Global Awareness, Research Activities and Network to Address Ocean Microplastic Pollution" convened on April 9th at the PRBB-Barcelona Biomedical Research Park. Hosted by NORCE and IAEA, and organised together with the AIR Centre, SINTEF Ocean, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, European Atomic Agency and the EU project LabPlas, this event brought together high-level representatives, leading experts and stakeholders to spotlight the pressing issue of plastic pollution in our oceans. The satellite event aimed to elevate global awareness, offer novel insights and propose actionable solutions to combat ocean microplastic pollution. Throughout the program, attendees had the opportunity to delve into recent scientific discoveries, discuss international initiatives fostering capacity-building worldwide, and examine successful case studies demonstrating the pivotal role of research in shaping policy frameworks. Marc Metian from IAEA and Alessio Gomiero from NORCE kicked off the event with introductory remarks, setting the stage for engaging discussions and presentations. Highlights of the event included a presentation titled "Scientists Unite: Improving Hazard Assessment of Microplastics" followed by two panel discussions focusing on the multifaceted aspects of plastic pollution and the establishment of networks to support research and monitoring activities. The event concluded underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts and sustained action in combating ocean microplastic pollution. As the world collectively strives towards a sustainable future, such initiatives serve as critical catalysts for driving positive change and safeguarding our oceans for generations to come.
