The AIR Centre and the Fulbright Commission in Portugal signed a Partnership Agreement

On the morning of February 28th, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, establishing a partnership between the Fulbright Commission and the AIR Centre – Atlantic International Research Centre, for the implementation of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for the Ocean, Climate and Space / AIR Centre. The signature of this partnership agreement took place during the visit of Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) to the Fulbright Commission in Portugal. Assistant Secretary Satterfield leads the US global programs for academic, cultural, and professional exchanges, including the Fulbright Program. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for the Ocean, Climate and Space / AIR Centre offers annually an award for an American professor/researcher to collaborate on research projects at the AIR Centre, for a period of four months, in the areas of Biology, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Information Science and Systems, Mathematics, Oceanography and/or Physics. The awarded activities shall take place at the facilities of the AIR Centre in Lisbon and/or at its headquarters and Earth Observation Laboratory, located at Terinov – Science and Technology Park, on Terceira Island, Azores. Annual award calls will be published through the Institute of International Education, the organization that assists the Fulbright Program with grants for American teachers, with all information related to the yearly call. In scope of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program the AIR Centre received 5 American professors/researchers to collaborate on research projects at the AIR Centre since the school year 2018/2019. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is an academic exchange program of great international prestige, recognized for the excellence of individual participants and institutional partners, and therefore attracts high-quality candidates.

The discussion brought together AIR Centre Executive Director Miguel Miranda, Deputy Executive Director Mafalda Carapuço, and researcher Ana Faria, marking the beginning of a promising dialogue between the two nations.
