The 2022 UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, will take place on 27 June – 1 July 2022, in Lisbon, Portugal. The AIR Centre will be present in several activities, both as organizers and participants of UNOC official side-events. Innovation, Monitoring and Science at the Intersection of the Sea and Space | Ocean Stage, 27 Jun, 11h-11h45 | Organised by Sea Space. There are concurrent technology revolutions going on with ocean and space technologies. This 45 minute session will address how they are interacting to promote, protect and strengthen sustainable ocean-based economies, particularly as the price for real-time communications decreases. It wil also explore the benefits for SIDS and developing countries. Speakers will be from leading organizations in this field and could include the AIR Centre, clusters working on Sea-Space projects, the European Space Agency (ESA), NASA, NOAA, users in developing countries and SIDS, etc. More info: https://onesustainableocean.forumoceano.pt/

Marine life observations: Integrating biology and ecology observations to enable indicators for conservation, restoration, and sustainable development of marine and coastal ecosystems. Wave Stage, 28 Jun, 15h05-15h50 | Organised by CIIMAR & MBON. The Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) will be present and play a role in bringing together the Marine Life 2030 community. Good marine Life science and data are needed to make every decision involving the ocean. Experts and stakeholders will review co-design strategies, targeting the integration of biological observations into coastal/ocean observing systems and monitoring programs for ocean conservation. Integrating Marine Litter Monitoring to Inform Action | 29 Jun, 8h-19h30 | Centro Cultural Cascais (by invitation). This event builds on the UN Decade “Clean Ocean” Satellite activity One Integrated Marine Debris Observing System (IMDOS), that took place in November 2021. It will focus on the need for monitoring marine litter to inform action with the following objectives: • Advocate the necessity of a global sustained Integrated Marine Debris Observing System (IMDOS) • Promote the building of a global IMDOS community • Encourage the cooperation among scientists and between scientists and stakeholders such as policy makers and mitigation actors. Maritime Transport and SDG 14 | 29 Jun, 13h-15h | Loyola de Palacio Conference Centre Credit: Avigator Fortuner. The European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) have joined forces to host an official side-event on “Maritime Transport and SDG 14: Exploring opportunities to monitor and reduce marine pollution and to enable the decarbonisation of maritime transport through space solutions and other innovative technologies”. The side-event will bring together a number of international actors to provide a European perspective on how to reduce marine pollution from ships and contribute to the decarbonisation of the shipping sector through innovative space applications and digital technologies. MAGAL, Ocean Radar Altimetry, a New Space Approach | 30 Jun, 14h-15h | Online MAGAL can significantly improve Ocean Monitoring, by flying a larger number of Constellations and in that way, making available a more often and spread data of Oceans. The side event “MAGAL, Ocean Radar Altimetry, a New Approach” will focus mainly in three topics: 1) Introduction to Radar Altimetry, current state-of-art and trends, 2) MAGAL Constellation project and 3) Debate panel with end-users of the main business cases and Radar altimetry expert. Neotropical Mangroves in the Ocean Decade: Call for Conservation and Restoration | 27 Jun, 19h Lisbon, 15h Brazil | Livestreamed on Youtube  The LABOMAR  will commemorate the opening “2022 United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development” on the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, with a online event with the central topic “Neotropical mangroves in the ocean decade: call for conservation and restoration”, observation how it will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water and for delivering greater benefits for both the ocean ecosystems and for society within the context of the UN Decade of Ocean Science 2021-2030.
