The Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership’s launches its second joint transnational call

The Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership announced its second joint transnational call, “Unified Paths to a Climate-Neutral, Sustainable, and Resilient Blue Economy: Engaging Civil Society, Academia, Policy, and Industry", which aims to support transnational research and innovation projects of 36 months duration. The second co-funded call of this EU Partnership pools national and regional financial resources through the participation of 38 funding organisations from 26 countries combined with the contribution from the European Union. The total estimated budget is about EUR 40 million. Projects must focus on one of four priority areas: Digital Twins of the Ocean, Blue Economy sectors, Planning and managing sea-uses, or Blue Bioresources. They should contribute to transitioning to a blue economy for a more resilient future and towards carbon neutrality. Proposals must involve at least two European sea basins and assess their impact on various basins, including those like the Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Arctic, Barents Sea, and Celtic Sea, from different European Sea basins such as the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, and Atlantic Ocean. The initiative presents potential opportunities for Atlantic countries to engage in collaborative research and innovation efforts focused on the Atlantic Ocean basin. By collaborating with European partners, non-European countries could access expertise, resources, and technology, enhancing their own capabilities in the blue economy domain. Participation in transnational projects funded through this call also offers networking opportunities with European institutions and stakeholders, facilitating future collaborations and addressing common challenges on a global scale. Institutions from countries not eligible for funding can still participate if they show to be self-funded. The vision of the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, a European partnership under the Horizon Europe Programme, is to design, steer and support a just and inclusive transition to a regenerative, resilient, and sustainable blue economy. This EU Partnership aims to boost the transformation needed towards a climate-neutral, sustainable, productive, and competitive blue economy by 2030 while creating and supporting the conditions for a sustainable ocean for the people by 2050.
